About Us
Thanks for visiting the Cyclepath Markham web site! To know about us is to know about me. My name is Jorge Varela, and I am the owner and operator of The Cyclepath in Markham, Ontario. My love affair with bicycles started with BMX in 1979.
At 13 years old, I delivered prescriptions for a local pharmacy by bicycle (a department store clunker). I did this all winter on the hilly streets of Toronto until I had enough money to build a state-of-the-art Redline BMX racer. It took me a lot of sweat at $2.15 an hour to earn the $600 I needed to finish it. I attended my first BMX race later that summer in Niagara Falls, New York, as there was no BMX racetrack in Ontario at the time. I had won the third place trophy form that first race, and I was hooked ever since, I read all of the magazines and hung around all of the best bicycle stores.
I was offered my first bike shop job at the infamous Bloor Cycle, Canada’s largest bike shop of that time, where I learned the in-and-outs of the bike business. They had the best wheel builders and mechanics in the business that taught me their special techniques and “ancient bike-man wisdom”. When a new store, the Cyclepath, opened it’s first location in Toronto in 1986, I became their mechanic. Over the next few years,I worked my way up from the repair shop to the sales floor, and eventually to a manager’s position at the Bloor and Duffrin location in west Toronto. In the summer of 1991, the dream of owning my own bike shop came true in Markham.
This bike shop at 29 Main street North has been in existence since the late ‘70s and officially became a Cyclepath location in 1989. I have been the owner since 1991. 20 years go by in hurry when you are having fun, and that’s what bicycles are all about. Having fun.
I still have tons of fun on my bicycles, whether I’m zigzagging through Durham forest with my best friends on my ultra-light cross-country racer, or dropping into a double black diamond run at Mt. Bromont on my super sturdy downhill bike.
So… whether you need a bike, parts, the latest accessories, or service, come on in and see me, Jorge Varela. I’m always happy to help you.
